If you are planning on starting your own greenhouse, you'll need to have all of the necessary supplies.

In addition to soil, seeds, and moisture, there's another element that you're going to need in order to grow an indoor garden: lighting. Virtually every species of plant needs sunlight in order to grow, but if you're growing inside, unless you have your plants situated near a window, they aren't going to thrive.

In fact, even if you do have them placed right near a window, your plants are only going to get a fraction of the benefits that sunlight provides, as the glass filters out a portion of these elements. Fortunately, there's a way to replicate natural sunlight. How? – With grow lights, of course! While there are several different types of grow lights on the market, HPS lights are among the most popular.

HPS stands for "High Pressure Sodium", and they have really changed the cultivation of indoor plants in a serious way high-pressure sodium (HPS) grow lights are types of high-intensity discharge light. HPS lights typically have red/orange output, which is ideal for flowering.

If you are growing plants that flower, enhanced-spectrum HPS grow lights are a better choice.

If you have done your research on indoor growing, and the tools used to bring a plant from seed to harvest without the sun, you know the importance of grow lights. HPS grow lights produce a massive amount of raw light output. That is the key to their popularity.

This intensity can produce great crop yields which is ideal when working with very large plants. But this lighting intensity also has the downside of using more electricity, generates more heat which increases costs for maintaining grow room temperatures with the necessity for added ventilation, and HPS grow bulbs often need replacement every 12-18 months. All of this adds to higher operation costs using HPS as your horticultural lighting solution.
